Sapphire Rush Near Kataragama

In February 2012 a new sapphire deposit was discovered at a road construction site near the town of Kataragama, situated in the Monaragala District of Uva Province, Sri Lanka. The area has been known as a sapphire-producing area since the end of the 1970s (Zwaan, 1981). The Sri Lankan authorities were swift to react when news of the find broke, and after a brief gem rush the deposit was secured and an auction over the mining rights was organized by the National Gem & Jewellery Authority (NGJA). Official mining activity commenced in March 2012. MORE

EU to Lift Myanmar Sanctions; Still No Burma Rubies in U.S.

Luxembourg--The European Union will suspend sanctions against Myanmar (formerly Burma) for one year, says this report in the Financial Times. Embargoes on trade, asset freezes, and travel bans are being lifted, including in the mining sector. But the United States' ban on trade remains in place.
…Douglas Hucker, executive director of the American Gem Trade Association, says AGTA is working in Washington to effect that change...

AGS Conclave: Supporting artisanal gem miners

Miami-- AGTA Member Edward Boehm, G.G., C.G., presented "From Mine to Market" at AGS Conclave here, sharing with the audience his experience and knowledge of ruby and spinel mines in Myanmar, Tanzania and other overseas gem-producing countries.
There are 47 primary colored gemstone producing countries in the world, Boehm said, with 80 percent of all colored gemstones coming from artisanal small-scale mining operations.

Fred Weber Receives the 2012 Robert M. Shipley Award

May 1, 2012, Las Vegas. AGTA Member Fred Weber, CG, owner Weber’s Jewelers in Dayton, OH is the 2012 recipient of the American Gem Society’s Robert M. Shipley award. AGS members presented him with the award at their annual Conclave in San Francisco, CA on April 37.
Fred received the award based on his expertise and commitment to his community, personal business, the jewelry industry, and the American Gem Society, and because of his outstanding service to the AGS and his participation in local civic groups, service organizations, and industry boards.

Geneva jewelry auctions next month will spotlight mid-20th-century French celebrity designer Suzanne Belperron and contemporary Brazilian collector and philanthropist Lily Safra.
On May 14, Sotheby's will offer Belperron's personal collection with some 60 lots, including her hammered 22-karat-gold, yin-and-yang engagement ring from 1923, adorned with an old-mine diamond, which is estimated at 11,000 Swiss francs-17,000 francs (€9,152-€14,144).
