Glass filled rubies were a focus of the CIBJO Coloured Stone Commission, which met this morning during the first day of the CIBJO Congress in Vicenza, Italy. Such gemstones are a hot topic in the marketplace, with controversy surrounding the topic as to how they should be defined.
Many of these treated gemstones stones have large, but unquantifiable amounts of lead glass in them, and are therefore called "composite ruby" by the gemmological and coloured stone business community. MORE
