The Votes Are In: AGTA Spectrum 'Editor's Choice Award' 2012
Ramscale Studio penthouse loft hosted the AGTA Spectrum Awards Media Day in NY, where consumer press, stylists and bloggers enjoyed a stellar skyline view and jewels that sparkled with brilliance from the sunset. The sky’s vivid hues were out shined however, by the array of gleaming AGTA Spectrum Award winning pieces that were displayed on white tables to be judged and voted on for the Editor's Choice Award. Slipping on Best of Show winner, a platinum "lava" ring made of ruby cabochon encrusted with marquis-cut diamonds, we knew that to narrow our votes, we had a lot of enjoyable work at hand. MORE

These two exceptional rings with Zultanite gemstones were designed by David Hrubec. David was born in one of Europe's nurseries of art: In the ancient city of Prague. The Zultanite gems were cut by award winning cutters, brothers Ralph and Rudi Wobito from Ontario, Canada.

Big Rocks are Back
Last week American news wires reported, in a single-sentence article, the discovery of the world’s largest sapphire, a 93-pound specimen that a Sri Lankan company reportedly hacked into pieces, including an 85,000-carat chunk that it hopes to sell for some $800 million. "We are very positive that this stone will bring a lot of fame," an unnamed company representative revealed in an on-camera interview that appeared on The Wall Street Journal’s website. Meanwhile, halfway around the world, a Christie's auction set a new per-carat record for a nine-carat Kashmir sapphire--just one of a string of landmark jewelry sales that occurred this year. MORE

Pala Gems- AGTA Member
In May, we tempted you with reports on island-nation corundum finds in Sri Lanka and Madagascar. Vincent Pardieu, of the GIA Laboratory in Bangkok, and his coauthors produced an 82-page study of the Sri Lanka find, but the larger work on the Madagascar discovery was yet to come. As usual, the wait was worth it. MORE

What Makes Gemstones Valuable?
OMI - AGTA Member
The world of colored gemstones is incredible. Learning the path that a gemstone takes from the earth into a finished jewelry design is an amazing experience that can be felt every time it is viewed or worn. But one may ask, "What makes a gemstone valuable?" From ancient times gems have been used to beautify and adorn. They have also acted as currency and been held as tangible assets of wealth. Collecting gemstones is a wonderful investment to also be admired, enjoyed, and passed on to future generations. Our heirs will cherish very few things that are as personal and as valuable as a fine gem, which always carries an exciting story! Below we discuss some of the more rare gemstones and their valuable stories. MORE

Today earrings are worn to draw attention to the face. This seasons earring trends are all about vibrant hues borrowed from nature and a new twist on classic looks. This is nothing new for Oscar Heyman since colored stones and innovative designs are their signature style. MORE

Brazilian Gemstones on the Rise
National Jeweler 10X
Brazil produces much of the world's gemstone supply with vast reserves in the northeastern part of the country. Increased global demand for colored gemstones has enabled renewed mining activity in one of the world's most productive mining regions.
On a recent trip to Brazil, I was fortunate to have an opportunity to travel through the eastern state of Minas Gerais visiting various gem mines with a friend who is a well-known Brazilian mining geologist. Minas Gerais or "General Mines" is the largest gemstone mining region in Brazil. It is about the size of California and Florida combined and is a major source of fine aquamarine, tourmaline, topaz, emerald and numerous other gems. The region is experiencing renewed activity due to the tremendous increase in global demand for colored gemstones.
