February 6, 2013 - Tucson, AZ: The American Gem Trade Association (AGTA) reported amazing attendance and brisk business from the show floor of its annual GemFair in Tucson, AZ. Brazil produces more topaz than any other country in the world. Most of the production is colorless, which is irradiated and heated into various shades of blue. Precious and imperial topaz offer a rare and warmer alternative to the cool blue shades we are accustomed to seeing in jewelry stores. “Precious” topaz usually refers to yellow to orange colors while "imperial" topaz usually refers to pinkish-orange to pink to purple and even red colors (see figs. 1 and 6). Pretty much out in the middle of nowhere in Nevada, there is a little yarn store with a funny name, Jimmy Beans Wool. Actually, it's in Reno, but it's a small shop that sells a big assortment of knitting and crochet supplies and every kind of yarn you can imagine.
The store has become a fixture in Reno, but what is really amazing is that the store has annual revenue of more than $7 million, the vast majority from online sales.
