After months of looking at new fine jewelry collections for fall/holiday, I'm convinced that pearl jewelry needs some new descriptors. Words like classic, timeless, and elegant often don't apply to what I've seen some daring designers doing with pearls. And let's be honest: Talking about pearls in that way can be a bit off-putting to the new generation of women who mainly buy jewelry because it's fashionable and fun. In fact, those were frequently the kind of pieces layered on catwalk models for Resort 2014-pearl jewelry with a whimsical, not-so-serious vibe. MORE

Last week, Pala International's Bill Larson appraised the gemstone collection at the Mineralogical and Geological Museum at Harvard University. Bill was chosen by the museum's associate curator, Dr. Raquel Alonso-Perez, to appraise the collection's 1,200 pieces. The first day just over 500 pieces had been examined with two more full days to follow. "Raquel couldn't believe how focused I was when looking at the gems," Bill told us. Many special notes were documented. Bill reported that a good feeling emanated from all those involved.

A collection of late actress Elizabeth Taylor's personal items, including jewelry, cocktail dresses and film costumes, will go under the hammer in Beverly Hills, California, Julien's Auctions said on Tuesday.

55-carat Diamond Goes on Temporary View in NYC
A rare 19th century 55-carat diamond has gone on temporary view at New York's American Museum of Natural History.
The Kimberley Diamond gets its name from the mine in South Africa where it was found sometime before 1868.
