Inspired by a mixture of blooming flowers, travels abroad and strong, confident women, the palette's top 10 include a vibrant Dazzling Blue and Radiant Orchid, 2014 Color of the Year; very adaptable pastels in Placid Blue, Violet Tulip and Hemlock Green; vivid brights in Cayenne Red, Yellow Freesia, and Celosia Orange; and dependable neutrals in Sand and silvery Paloma. For once diamonds wasn't the top seller at a major jewelry auction. A Cartier jadeite bead, ruby and diamond necklace owned by Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton sold for more than $27.4 million at Sotheby's Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite Auction. The sale set world auction records for a Jadeite jewel and for a Cartier jewel, the auction house said. It was also sold for more than double its estimate of HK100 million. MORE

Exhibit Review: "Jewels by JAR" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Since November 20, 2013, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City has hosted the "Jewels by JAR" retrospective, marking the Met's first-ever show dedicated to a living contemporary jeweler. Bronx-born Joel Arthur Rosenthal, known professionally as JAR, is known to be very particular in his dealings with the outside world. He does not lend his designs for magazine shoots or make red carpet appearances. Nevertheless, his jewelry is among some of the most sought after at auction, frequently fetching multi-million-dollar bids. The JAR retrospective, curated by Jane Adlin and displaying 395 pieces, is located in the Helen and Milton A. Kimmelman Gallery on the museum's first floor, in its Modern and Contemporary Art galleries, which also house Matisse, Klee, and Picasso paintings. MORE
