Reginald C. Miller, "Mr.Sapphire", Passes Away
Reginald C. Miller, of Southern Pines, passed away Monday, March 10, 2014, at age 93. Reggie was born and spent his early years in London, England. He was an accomplished cycle racer winning many 50-mile road races, culminating in the title of Junior Champion of England. At the outbreak of World War II, Reggie enlisted and served in the British Royal Air Force. After the war, he immigrated to New York where he became a successful cutter and dealer of colored gem stones. He was a Member of AGTA from 1984 to 2010! His expertise as a lapidary was so well recognized that he was dubbed "Mr. Sapphire" within the gem trade. MORE

Blue Sapphires from the Baw Mar Mine in Mogok

For several centuries, Burmese blue sapphires have been prized in the gemstone trade. Virtually all gem-quality blue sapphires from Burma (now Myanmar) have occurred in alluvial deposits along the Mogok Stone Tract. The previously described sapphires were mostly found at the Kyat Pyin area at Kyauk-Pyat-That, Kabaing, and Thurein-Taung (all west of Mogok) and at Chaung Gyee in the north of Mogok (Gübelin and Koivula, 1986; Kiefert, 1987; Hughes, 1997; Themelis, 2008; Smith, 2010). In the last five years, blue sapphires with properties different from the "classic" Burmese sapphires, reportedly from the Baw Mar area of Mogok, have reached the market (figure 1).MORE

Milenyum Mining Donates two rare Csarite gemstones to Smithsonian Institute
As of March 7th, 2014 the Smithsonian Institution's National Gem and Mineral Collection in Washington, D.C., became the home to two high profile gemstone specimens- two rare Czarite gemtones, each weighing a whopping 159.33 carats and 44.48 carats, respectively. Milenyum Mining, a Dubai-based miner, donated the stones at the American Gem Trade Association's GemFair, which took place Feb. 4 to 9 in Tucson. MORE
